Floral Design

In this introductory floral design class, Juliet Totten will guide you in techniques that will take your arranging skills from basic to bodacious! Each participant with create their own floral centerpiece using locally sourced, seasonal blooms. Processing flowers for arranging to ensure they stay fresh, professional tip and tricks and composition will all be covered in this 2 hour class. After the class is over take your masterpiece home to enjoy or give it to someone you love (ehemmm… don’t forget Mother’s Day is the 12th).

As the co-founder of New York based design firm, Poppies & Posies, Juliet Totten’s floral designs have been featured in publications such as Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides and New York Magazine. Since leaving NYC, Juliet has continued her floral design work all over the world, from Morocco to the coast of Maine to right here in Birmingham.

 

Sip & Sketch: Procreate Basics

Dive into the world of digital art with Sip & Sketch: Procreate Basics with Savvy of Sunspark Creative! Join us for an engaging evening where you'll learn the fundamentals of Procreate, including interface navigation, brush techniques, and color selection. Savvy will take you on a fun, creative journey to illustrate a piece of fruit and transform it into a captivating character. Bring your iPad, Apple Pencil, and beverage of choice, and get ready to unleash your imagination in a relaxed and supportive environment. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your digital art skills, this class offers an exciting opportunity to learn, create, and connect with fellow artists. 

This class will be centered around iPad/Apple Pencil Specific techniques in Procreate. At this time, We do require you to bring your own iPad & Pencil. If you are interested in taking this class & do not have access to an iPad, please let us know. 

 

Stained Glass
With Blue Dragon Glass

In this five-week class, Rhandie Weaver, of Blue Dragon Glass, will teach you the basics of stained glass. You'll learn how to cut glass, grind, foil, solder, frame, and clean a stained glass panel. By the end, you'll have a beautiful piece of art and some new skills to take home. This class is great for both beginners and intermediate students, with designs to fit ability. The class enrollment fee includes all materials and we will have all the tools on hand that you will need.

Rhandie Weaver, the owner, and artist at Blue Dragon Glass, has been working with glass for 20 years. She started by taking a stained-glass class and fell in love. She taught herself glass carving and etching as well as kiln-formed glass and mosaics. She has a statue from the “Vulcans on Parade” series that resides at the Birmingham Zoo. She also has a panel at the J. Clyde on Cobb Lane in 5 Points. She loves to teach and has offered classes in stained glass, etched glass, fused glass, and mosaics.

 

Introduction to
Book Making

This five week series will introduce some of the basic processes of bookmaking and provide an entry into the techniques used in making hand sewn books. We will learn about the different tools and terminologies that are used, work through several types of book forms, and complete several books over the course of the sessions. 

David West is an artist living in Birmingham with over 20 years of art teaching experience. He has an MFA in printmaking, has been a bookmaker for about a dozen years and is a drawing specialist. His work is a mixture of observation and contemplation exploring the world around him. There are very few things he would rather do than sit with a good friend, a good sketchbook, and see what there is to draw.

 

How to make bad art

Join us for a three-week journey of creative exploration at How to Make Bad Art, where we embrace imperfection and celebrate the joy of making art without boundaries. Led by Lauren Beagle, this mixed-media class offers a supportive space for artists and creatives to break through artistic ruts and rediscover their passion for creation.

Discover playful techniques to overcome creative blocks and embrace the freedom of making "bad" art as a catalyst for growth. Weekly sessions include interactive exercises, discussions, and personalized projects and will offer a place to connect with a supportive community of fellow artists sharing similar struggles.

We’ll have materials on hand for an immersive and hands-on experience, including your new Bad Art Sketchbook. Join us on this journey of self-discovery, experimentation, and creative empowerment. Let's redefine what it means to make art and find joy in the process.

 

Tie dye with before you dye

Get ready to unleash your creativity with our Tie Dye class hosted by After You Dye! In this dynamic session, you'll dive into the colorful world of tie-dyeing under the expert guidance of Zach. Discover the art of folding, tying, and dyeing fabric as you explore different techniques and create stunning patterns on t-shirts, bandanas, and more.

During the class, you'll learn essential prepping methods, including laundering and soda ash soaking, to ensure vibrant and long-lasting colors. Zach will walk you through various folding and tying techniques, allowing you to experiment and create unique designs.

With all materials provided, including high-quality white t-shirts and Dharma Dye, you'll have everything you need to unleash your inner artist and create wearable works of art. Don't miss this opportunity to learn a timeless craft and leave with your very own hand-dyed creations!


 

WATERCOLOR Basics: Landscapes

This one-night class class is perfect for those who are curious about the basics or just want to brush up on their skills. We'll kick things off with an introduction to materials, tools, and watercolor techniques, then bring it all together on landscape images provided or based on your own reference images. You are welcome to bring your own brushes and paints to use during class. Or, if you're looking to build your artistic toolkit, we've got sets of 4 synthetic hair watercolor brushes and Winsor & Newton Twelve Color Watercolor Pocket Boxs available for purchase as that will be yours to keep. All other materials will be provided.

 
 

Intro to Screen Printing

This workshop provides you with a casual, fun introduction to the materials and processes you use to use silkscreen for printing, including a brief look at how screens are created, how to select and mix inks, and how to make a smooth print onto paper and fabric. Each student will leave with their own screen printed t-shirt and poster.

Intermediate Screen Printing

This workshop provides you with an in-depth dive to the materials and processes you use to use silkscreen for printing. We’ll start with the process of prepping & burning screens, cover how to select and mix inks, setting up to print 2-color prints, and finally how to make a smooth two color print that you’ll be able to take home.

DESIGN Your Own Print

Similar to the introductory course, this class will teach you the basics of screen printing with a brief overview of how screens are created, how to select and mix inks, and how to make a smooth print. Prior to class, you’ll be asked to send in your own one-color design to use to print a few shirts, totes, tea towels or posters.


CERAMICS:

throwing On the Wheel

Learn the basics of creating your own ceramic pieces from Jessica Russell of Studio Ember or Lewis Denver. Over a four-week course, we will focus on throwing clay on the wheel, trimming your pieces, and glazing to make your work unique. This class is great for beginners and helpful for those with limited experience working with clay. Completion of Intro to Ceramics will give you access to a Ceramics Membership.

This class will cover the basic terminology and techniques of throwing, so it’s ideal for both beginners and those who've completed Intro to Ceramics: Handbuilding. At the end of the four-week class, we will do a final glaze firing and all of your pieces will be available to be picked up and taken to their new home!

Handbuilding with Slabs

Learn the basics of ceramics while exploring handbuilding with Jess Jenkies. Over three weeks, learn slab building and sculpting methods to create ring dishes, spoons, decorative tiles, coasters. Then venture into creating your own designs. Finish by exploring various surface textures and glazes to complete your pieces. Completion of Intro to Ceramics will give you access to a Ceramics Membership.

This class will cover the basic terminology and techniques of handbuilding, so it’s ideal for both beginners and those who've completed Intro to Ceramics: Throwing. At the end of the three-week class, we will do a final glaze firing and all of your pieces will be available to be picked up and taken to their new home!
