A second is any piece that does not meet it's maker's standards. The work may be a second for many reasons. It may have glaze flaws, pinholes, crazing, or unwanted drips. It may have a hairline crack around the handle or on the base of the piece. Seconds may be practice pieces made by someone relatively new to the craft. Many seconds are still food safe and function as intended, while others may be repurposed into planters, trinket dishes, or shelf decorations.

Seconds are sold on a sliding scale of discounted rates to reflect their flaws.
