Beginner Ceramics Afternoon

Wednesdays, July 8 - 29, 4 - 6pm

Pre-requisite: None

Ages: 16+ (12 and up are welcome if signed up with an adult)

Learn the basics of creating your own ceramic pieces from local ceramists Jessica Russell, Chuy Guizar, or Bethany Bible. Over a three-week course, we will focus on a step-by-step approach to throwing clay on the wheel, trimming your pieces, and glazing. This class is the place to start if you are new to the wheel and helpful for those with limited experience working with clay to build skills guided by an instructor.

The studio has all the materials & tools you will need. We recommend wearing warm layers, clothes and shoes you aren’t afraid to get muddy, and trimming your nails before class.

What to Expect:
This class will teach you the basic terminology and process of creating ceramics through the process of throwing on the wheel. Throwing is used for symmetrical cylindrical shapes and is great for creating making cups, bowls, plates etc. If this is your first ceramics class, you can expect a bit of a learning curve (but that’s okay, it’s why we are here!), it will be difficult to hop on the wheel and instantly start producing large pitchers. We will start small, get the feel of the clay, then work our way up. We hope that each student completes 3 - 5 pieces to pick up after the final firing.

Class Schedule:

Night One: Throwing Demo & Practice, we will start with an introduction to the studio, tools, and an overview of the class. Then dive into an in-depth throwing demo covering the basics of shaping clay on the wheel. This evening is just for practice, we won’t keep anything we throw.

Night Two: We will be back throwing on the wheel with similar demos to night one. We will use this time to create 3 - 5 pieces that we will use in the following classes.

Night Three: Trimming, Now that your pieces have dried to a leather hard stage, you will learn to trim them, using trimming tools and sponges to smooth and shape your piece, especially the bottom. After this session, your pieces will be dried completely & fired to bisque.

Night Four: Glazing, Now that your pieces are bisqued, it's time to learn about glaze. After this session, we will fire your pieces again with pieces ready to pick up about a week later.

If there is no option to enroll above, this class is at capacity. If you’d like to be added to this waitlist please email us at info@makebhm.

The completed casting will be returned the following week and students will learn hand finishing techniques to complete their work.

All materials and tools will be provided, however you can add on a tool kit to keep if you’d like. The goal of this class will be setting you up with the skills to be able to continue carving at your house/studio.

Mini files
Wax carvers set (dental tools)
Digital Calipers
Jewelry Saw
Fine saw blades

Ceramics Seconds Sale

Ceramics Seconds Sale

The ceramics studio is hosting their annual seconds sale!

A second is any piece that does not meet it's maker's standards. The work may be a second for many reasons. It may have glaze flaws, pinholes, crazing, or unwanted drips. It may have a hairline crack around the handle or on the base of the piece. Seconds may be practice pieces made by someone relatively new to the craft. Many seconds are still food safe and function as intended, while others may be repurposed into planters, trinket dishes, or shelf decorations.

Seconds are sold on a sliding scale of discounted rates to reflect their flaws.

Use a flame to bend and shape stringers (think glass spaghetti) into fun doodles and arrange them onto glass squares to be fused into a fun set of coasters. In this class we’ll learn general warm-glass rules and discuss color reactions in fusing that can either be avoided or used as design elements. Sharon will then fire the pieces in her kiln, and your coaster set will be ready to pick up in a week or two.

Beginner Ceramics

Beginner Ceramics

Wednesdays, May 6 - 27 , 6:30 - 8:30pm
