Beginner Ceramics - Three Week

  • MAKEbhm 4000 3rd Avenue South Birmingham, AL, 35222 United States (map)

Wednesdays, January 14 - 28, 6 - 8pm

Pre-requisite: None

Ages: 16+ (12 and up are welcome if signed up with an adult)

Learn the basics of creating your own ceramic pieces from local ceramists Jessica Russell, Chuy Guizar, or Bethany Bible. Over a three-week course, we will focus on a step-by-step approach to throwing clay on the wheel, trimming your pieces, and glazing. This class is the place to start if you are new to the wheel and helpful for those with limited experience working with clay to build skills guided by an instructor.

The studio has all the materials & tools you will need. We recommend wearing warm layers, clothes and shoes you aren’t afraid to get muddy, and trimming your nails before class.

What to Expect:
This class will teach you the basic terminology and process of creating ceramics through the process of throwing on the wheel. Throwing is used for symmetrical cylindrical shapes and is great for creating making cups, bowls, plates etc. If this is your first ceramics class, you can expect a bit of a learning curve (but that’s okay, it’s why we are here!), it will be difficult to hop on the wheel and instantly start producing large pitchers. We will start small, get the feel of the clay, then work our way up. We hope that each student completes 3 - 5 pieces to pick up after the final firing.

Class Schedule:

Night One: Throwing Demo & Practice, we will start with an introduction to the studio, tools, and an overview of the class. Then dive into an in-depth throwing demo covering the basics of shaping clay on the wheel. We will use this time to create 3 - 5 pieces that we will use in the following classes.

Night Two: Trimming, Now that your pieces have dried to a leather hard stage, you will learn to trim them, using trimming tools and sponges to smooth and shape your piece, especially the bottom. After this session, your pieces will be dried completely & fired to bisque.

Night Three: Glazing, Now that your pieces are bisqued, it's time to learn about glaze. After this session, we will fire your pieces again with pieces ready to pick up about a week later.
